Workshop Schedule

🗓️ September: Corkscrews & Musicality

Watch the pre-requisite video

Monday, 21 Sept, 5:00pm – 6:00pm New Zealand Standard Time.

Learn the corkscrew, explore its coolest variations, and discover the underrated horizontal plane to add a fresh dimension to your poi flow. We’ll also learn how to match your poi spinning to music. This improves coordination, feels nice, and is a great way to synchronize multiple poi spinners.

🗓️ October: Techniques & Seated Poi

No pre-requisites, however we recommend coming with poi that are relatively light and short

Monday, 19 Oct, 8:00am – 9:00am New Zealand Standard Time.

Learning poi technique is learning skills that apply to many poi tricks. By practicing basic poi skills, you will find that learning new tricks comes easier and faster. Then, we explore poi from a seated perspective, discovering creative variations and practical ways to adapt movements for different physical abilities—giving you fresh ideas for more accessible and inclusive classes.

🗓️ November: Transitions & Choreography

Watch the pre-requisite video

Sunday, 15 Nov, 5:00pm – 6:00pm New Zealand Standard Time.

Learn the art of smooth transitions by exploring pathways between different moves and planes. Using the 3-beat weave to butterfly as a key example, you’ll learn techniques that help connect your flow seamlessly and apply the same principles to countless other transitions. We will show you a step-by-step process to follow to create a routine to music for yourself or a group.

🗓️ December: Routine to Music Holiday Party!

Watch the pre-requisite video

Monday, 7 Dec, 5:00 – 6:00pm New Zealand Standard Time

Join us in a festive session where we’ll weave all of our poi skills together into one choreography set to holiday music. We’re holding the session early in the month, so you’ll have time to bring the routine back to your own classes and clients — spreading the holiday spirit, one orbit at a time.

Meet Your Instructors

All sessions are co-taught by Certified SpinPoi Instructors Sarah Tarek and Kay Spinner.

Sarah has over three years of teaching experience. Poi has been a big part of her personal journey, and she shares it with a deep understanding of its foundations, technique, and flow principles. Sarah loves breaking things down in a clear, supportive way that makes learning feel accessible and empowering. She focuses on building strong movement foundations, body awareness, and mindful flow, helping students progress with confidence at their own pace.

Kay fell in love with poi spinning 30 years ago. After many years of spinning poi as a hobby, Kay began performing, and teaching poi. She now works at a circus school where she teaches poi, juggling, and other forms of prop manipulation. Kay teaches an understanding of poi concepts that improves overall poi spinning as well as individual tricks.

Unlock the Level Up Archive

Missed a session or want to revisit one? The Level Up Archive gives you access to past Level Up Your Poi recordings, so you can learn at your own pace or go back to a topic that’s relevant to you now. Choose any past topic below – simply put the topic you’d like to access in the Order Notes box at checkout.

1. Turns in All Timings and Directions: we’ll guide you to turn and move freely, 360 degrees in space with your poi.

2. Forward Weaves, 2 Beat and 3 Beat: a beautiful smooth poi movement that will open possibilities for many variations and transitions.

3. Buzzsaw and Inspins: buzzsaw is a short string movement that’s perfect for seated spinning and adding visual variation. We’ll also explore inspin patterns with varying numbers of petals, across different planes, timings, and directions.

4. Butterflies: we’ll explore how this foundational pattern can evolve into something much richer through thread the needle and extended butterflies.

5. Tuck Turns, Windmills, and Fountains: a strong focus on controlling the poi through unseen space and understanding the connection between your body orientation and the poi.

6. Stalls and Antispin: stalls allow you to change direction and also improve plane control, speed control, and left/right independence. Antispin opens up a whole new layer of movement, expanding your pattern vocabulary.

Reviews

“Thank you for the great class! The turns have opened up my poi so much and the simple lesson of having a locked elbow spinning away from my body then letting arms go loose as I turned has improved my form and spins. Really enjoyed the class.” – Chris

“I find learning very hard unless I get different “spins” haha on the same thing. Sarah and Kay, between the two of them, gave plenty of key phrases, showing things from different angles, try this, or try that, and the way the video was presented worked 100% for me. Really helpful to be able to replay the movements over and over again. Looking forward to the next video already.” – Annemarie
