Workshop Schedule

🗓️ June: Butterflies

Sunday, 21 June, 5:00pm – 6:00pm New Zealand Standard Time.

We’ll be diving into butterflies and their variations, exploring how this foundational pattern can evolve into something much richer. Through thread the needle and extended butterflies, we’ll play with different pathways, timing, and directions to expand your understanding of how the poi travels through space. This workshop will help you build better spatial awareness and more control of the wall plane—especially when it comes to spinning your poi in opposite directions.

🗓️ July: Tuck Turns, Windmills, and Fountains

Sunday, 26 July, 5:00pm – 6:00pm New Zealand Standard Time.

We will work on tuck turns, with a strong focus on controlling the poi through unseen space and understanding the connection between your body orientation and the poi. This approach will deepen your sense of direction, timing, and overall flow, helping you move with greater awareness. This is a great way to get into Windmills and fountains which are split time/same direction patterns. They transition seamlessly with each other and with weaves and add height to your poi spinning.

🗓️ August: Stalls & Antispin

Sunday, 23 August, 5:00pm – 6:00pm New Zealand Standard Time.

Learning stalls allows you to change direction with the poi, an alternative to pendulums. The process of learning to stall also improves plane control, speed control, and left/right independence. Stalls are a useful move for musicality in your poi spinning, also a great way to get into antispins and the concept behind them, helping you see how your poi can move in opposition to your hand. Understanding antispin opens up a whole new layer of movement, expanding your pattern vocabulary and control. It’s a key milestone that will shift how you approach flow and unlock a wide range of new possibilities.

Meet Your Instructors

All sessions are co-taught by Certified SpinPoi Instructors Sarah Tarek and Kay Spinner.

Sarah has over three years of teaching experience. Poi has been a big part of her personal journey, and she shares it with a deep understanding of its foundations, technique, and flow principles. Sarah loves breaking things down in a clear, supportive way that makes learning feel accessible and empowering. She focuses on building strong movement foundations, body awareness, and mindful flow, helping students progress with confidence at their own pace.

Kay fell in love with poi spinning 30 years ago. After many years of spinning poi as a hobby, Kay began performing, and teaching poi. She now works at a circus school where she teaches poi, juggling, and other forms of prop manipulation. Kay teaches an understanding of poi concepts that improves overall poi spinning as well as individual tricks.

Reviews

“Thank you for the great class! The turns have opened up my poi so much and the simple lesson of having a locked elbow spinning away from my body then letting arms go loose as I turned has improved my form and spins. Really enjoyed the class.” – Chris

“I find learning very hard unless I get different “spins” haha on the same thing. Sarah and Kay, between the two of them, gave plenty of key phrases, showing things from different angles, try this, or try that, and the way the video was presented worked 100% for me. Really helpful to be able to replay the movements over and over again. Looking forward to the next video already.” – Annemarie
